Kurukshetra Parliamentary Constituency Assessment of Learning
This study was undertaken to generate constituency-level evidence on schooling patterns, learning outcomes, and digital skills in Haryana’s Parliamentary Constituency of Kurukshetra, in collaboration with the Naveen Jindal Foundation, chaired by Member of Parliament Shri Naveen Jindal. The study covered 3,892 children and youth aged 3 to 18 years across 101 villages and 92 schools.
The household survey tracked enrolment among children and youth aged 3 to 18 and assessed foundational reading, arithmetic, and English abilities for those aged 5 to 18. It also assessed financial and digital literacy among youth aged 14 to 18, along with their aspirations related to further education and future work. School-based surveys were conducted in the same villages to document facilities, infrastructure, and provisions aligned with Right to Education norms.
Findings from the study show that foundational reading levels among younger children in the constituency are stronger than ASER 2024 state and national averages, with 57.8% of Std III children able to read a Std II level text. However, a substantial proportion of children continue to struggle with basic reading and arithmetic as they progress through school. By Std V, about 27% of children are unable to read a Std II level text, and only around 40% can solve a three-digit by one-digit division problem, suggesting the need for continued support in strengthening foundational learning.
