Do-It-Yourself ASER (DIYA) is a toolkit that anyone can use to test the basic learning levels of children aged 5-16. The toolkit contains the reading and arithmetic testing tools, instructions on using the tools, and formats to record test results.
The DIYA toolkit is available in Hindi and English with detailed instructions on how to use the testing tools. These assessment tools can be used by educationists, teachers, scholars, and any citizen to measure the basic reading and arithmetic ability of children aged 5-16 years. The reading test has four tasks: letters, words, a paragraph (Grade 1-level text), and a slightly more complex story (Grade 2-level text). The arithmetic test also contains four tasks: identifying single-digit numbers, double-digit numbers, subtraction with borrowing, and division. The toolkit contains instructions on administering these tests and formats on how to compile and analyse the collected data.
